Organic Rakitovec powder
Sea buckthorn, also known as dog thorn, is a deciduous, thorny shrub that grows all over the world, particularly in Central and Western Asia (China, Siberia, India…) and in Northern and Central Europe (Finland, England, Germany, Poland, …). It is a plant that does not require any special growing conditions, thriving both in high-altitude regions and by the sea.
The shape and appearance of the sea buckthorn’s leaves are reminiscent of olive leaves. The shrub bears fruits that are yellow-orange in colour. The best time to harvest sea buckthorn berries is in the early autumn months. The berries must be carefully removed from the branches, as it is precisely the sea buckthorn berries that are very important, as they contain a medicinal juice rich in vitamin C. Their flavour is juicy and slightly tart. The entire plant has beneficial properties for health and general use, including in cosmetics; the leaves, fruits, branches and even the root are all useful.
The history of its medicinal effects dates back to ancient Greece, where sea buckthorn branches were fed to horses to keep them in good condition. In addition, soldiers consumed buckthorn to boost their stamina during battles. “rGyud Bzi” is a Tibetan medical text written in the 8th century, which contains the earliest records of the medicinal properties of buckthorn. Subsequent research carried out in Russia has further confirmed its medicinal properties.
What are the key properties that sea buckthorn offers us?
Sea buckthorn stores all its solar energy in its berries, which contain countless bioactive substances such as essential fatty acids, vitamins, carotenoids, phytosterols, flavonoids and tocotrienols.
Among the essential fatty acids, the best plant-based source is omega-7 (palmitic acid) fatty acids. Using special methods, other fatty acids that are very important to us are also extracted from sea buckthorn berries, namely omega-3 (α-linolenic acid), omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-9 (oleic acid) fatty acids.
Sea buckthorn is rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C, of which it contains 10 times more than is found in a lemon. The fruit’s skin is rich in vitamin B-12, and it also contains vitamins B, B1, B2, B3 and B9. Vitamins A and E are also important. The oil found in the fruit also has positive effects on our health, as it contains plenty of amino acids, minerals, essential fatty acids and phytosterols.
The most important component of sea buckthorn is quercetin, a flavonoid, a natural polyphenolic compound found in fruit and vegetables. It is a powerful antioxidant.
Other equally important components of sea buckthorn are minerals, phosphorus, potassium and iron; magnesium and calcium are particularly essential.
Our sea buckthorn powder is organically grown and is a true source of strength, as it strengthens the body, particularly the nervous system.
