Common juniper berries

Juniper is an evergreen shrub, and less commonly a tree, belonging to the cypress family. The berries are the fruits, which take two years to ripen. As juniper is rarely cultivated, most of the berries on sale are harvested from wild plants. They have a slightly bitter and resinous taste.

Uses

Juniper berries are used in the preparation of various dishes, particularly sauerkraut, fish and game. The berries can be used whole or crushed. The latter, in particular, impart a strong aroma, so season gradually. Remove the whole juniper berries before serving. They go well with parsley, marjoram and thyme.

In folk medicine, juniper berries have been used to treat urinary tract infections, bronchitis and asthma. It acts as a mild diuretic and alleviates rheumatic problems.

The best-known juniper-based product is, of course, juniper brandy or gin. However, it is also found in other herbal alcoholic drinks.

We advise against its use by pregnant women and those with kidney problems.

Storage

Store in a dry, dark and cool place. Ensure that the bag or box is tightly sealed.
