Red seaweed dulse
Dulse is a red seaweed, also known as red palmaria or Palmaria palmata and belongs to the group of red algae or Rodophycophyta. Red algae also include nori algae and the probably more familiar agar agar, which is also used as a gelling agent in vegetarian and vegan diets.
Algae are an important source of iodine, which our body does not store and therefore we must consume it regularly (this is precisely why most table salt is iodized), as it is responsible for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, and a lack of it can lead to various medical conditions (from obtaining weight and fatigue to goitre and hypothyroidism). For problems with the thyroid gland and others, it is always good to consult a doctor before taking it.
Traditionally, red dulse algae has also been used to relieve high blood pressure problems; due to its vitamin A content, also as a support in preventing problems with low vision; it supports the functioning of the immune system, and due to the content of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, it alleviates problems with poor bone mass and poor connective tissue. Due to the content of the complex carbohydrate fucoidan, it also has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.
Algae are dried and ground into flakes. They are of excellent quality, as they are wild with an organic certificate, but they are harvested by hand in the Atlantic Ocean.
What does dulse algae contain?
Vitamins A, C and E – important antioxidants that protect us from free radicals; and group B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12), which are proven to alleviate stress and maintain energy levels.
Minerals and trace elements: calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, magnesium, iodine, potassium, phosphorus.
It also contains a lot of protein, amino acids and fiber, as well as omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, which play an important role in the health of our heart and blood vessels and inhibit inflammation.
In fact, it contains almost all the necessary trace elements for the human body.
Usage
Algae have a long history of use in both medicine and nutrition. Dulse is used in various (mainly) Asian recipes. They can be eaten as a snack with an alcoholic drink or added to soups, sauces, bread/pizza dough or salads, adding not only flavor but also nutrition to dishes. They can be used as such or soaked. Like other algae, they are also quite salty due to their high sodium content, and their taste is reminiscent of the sea, of fish, so it goes perfectly with fish and seafood. It acts as a flavor enhancer in cooked food. Adjust the amount to taste, start with 1/3 teaspoon per day, then gradually increase to a maximum of 1 teaspoon per day.
