Atractylodes (Atractylodes macrocephala) is a perennial plant that grows to a height of about half a metre. It has fleshy roots and a slender stem with branched leaves. It bears fruit in late summer or autumn. In China, it is also known as bai zhu. The roots, which are used for medicinal purposes, are dug up in winter, dried and thus prepared for consumption. Traditionally in China, it is used to strengthen Qi energy, fortify the body and boost resistance to disease. In traditional Chinese herbal medicine, it is considered one of the most important ingredients in many herbal mixtures. It is particularly often combined with ginseng.
