Dimethyl sulphoxide, also known as DMSO, has a unique history. At the end of the 19th century, this by-product of paper manufacturing was discovered in Germany; it is used as a solvent and is derived from a chemical found in wood.

It is a natural product produced from wood cellulose and, when used correctly, poses no health risk. DMSO is an organic, colourless, natural, non-synthetic liquid derived from lignin, which has become renowned for its ability to penetrate biological membranes such as the skin.

Scientists began studying the anti-inflammatory effects of this substance in the mid-20th century. DMSO is a prescription medicine that has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved for the treatment of various other medical conditions. It is available over the counter and is most commonly found in the form of a gel or cream.
