Organic Dong Quai (angelica) powder
Dong Quai is an ancient Chinese herb, also known as Angelica sinensis (Chinese angelica), and Dang Gui (pronounced tang Kuei). It is one of the most important herbs in the Eastern world.
Dong Quai grows in the high mountains, in the cool and humid regions of Japan, Korea and China. It is a hardy perennial that can reach a height of two metres. It has smooth purple stems, pinnately arranged leaves and small white or green flowers arranged in clusters. The medicinal part of Dong Quai, however, is its yellow-brown, branched roots, which are dried, cut up and used for medicinal purposes. Different parts of the root vary, and consequently their effects also differ.
What are the key active ingredients in Dong Quai?
Dong Quai contains high levels of folic, folinic and nicotinic acids, is enriched with vitamin B12, and also contains high levels of vitamins A and E, carotene, biotin and pantothenic acid. Cobalt, which is also found in angelica root, helps to strengthen the blood when combined with vitamin B12.
The most important factor in balancing female hormones is the hormone oestrogen, which can be replaced by a group of chemicals known as phytoestrogens. Angelica contains high levels of phytoestrogens. Furthermore, studies show that Dong Quai acts as a bidirectional regulator, inhibiting excessive oestrogen secretion or stimulating insufficient oestrogen secretion.
Dong Quai is also a ‘beauty tonic’ for the skin, as it stimulates blood flow in the skin and is used to promote a beautiful, radiant complexion.
