What is kudzu?

Kudzu (pronounced: kúdzu) is a fast-growing climbing plant native to East Asia – primarily China, Japan and Korea. It is also known as Japanese wild yam or kudzu root. It was originally used for animal feed, green manure and soil erosion control. In the 19th century, the plant was introduced to the USA, where it has proved to be an invasive species, as it can overgrow entire areas at an extraordinary rate, including forests, farmland and roads.

Kudzu belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae) and is related to pulses. It has large, trifoliate (three-part) leaves, purple flowers and thick roots, which contain numerous nutrients and medicinal compounds.

Kudzu is an exceptionally interesting plant with a long history of use in traditional medicine. The root contains isoflavones, particularly daidzein, daidzin and puerarin, which possess significant pharmacological properties.
